WHAT IS ADVANCED DRIVER ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS (ADAS)

ADAS is used to describe vehicle features designed to assist drivers, increase safety and avoid collisions. Think of them like the process of re-sighting a rifle when you put a scope on that has been removed.
These features can be as simple as blind spot warnings on side view mirrors, distance sensing cruise control (adaptive), automatic braking when a pending collision is sensed, or as complex as fully autonomous vehicle operation. With advanced features, ADAS can detect human movement or even read traffic signs.

adas systems

adaptive
  • Systems that change/adapt based on input from the surrounding environment. (Distance sensing cruise control.)
automated
  • Systems that take over and perform certain functions that are common with distracted driving. Automatic emergency braking. (AEB, LDW, LKA)
Monitoring
  • Systems that use sensors, cameras, doppler or other means to observe the surrounding area and assesses whether a warning is given or correction needs to be made.
warning
  • Systems that alert the driver to potential issues in their own driving or the driving of others that could increase the risk of collision or injury to yourself or others.

common examples of adas

Lane Departure Warning System
Alerts the driver that the vehicle is about to cross a line on the road without signaling.
Pedestrian Detection
Detects human movements to alert the driver.
Forward Collision Alert
Alerts the driver if the distance from a vehicle ahead is changing too quickly and warning lights will alert and brakes may be applied automatically.
Traffic Sign Recognition
Detects traffic signs and alerts the driver.

Other Examples

Each vehicle manufacturer may call their features by slightly different names, and may also have different icons.

Types of recalibration

Static
Requires the use of a target to re-aim the cameras or cruise control sensors. Vehicle is driven after to ensure propper recalibration was completed.
dual
Uses both methods to recalibrate the cameras.
dynamic
Rqequires driving the vehicle for varied distances, at a predetermined speed, for a certain time to re-aim the cameras. Road conditions affect this process greatly
